Four police officers of the Alpha SWAT Patrol team in Accra are receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for gunshot wounds sustained in their attempt to stop some young men from embarking on a robbery expedition.
Gbedema Rudorf, Gbemu Thompson, Charles Dankwah, Nyamekye (first name withheld) and Ebenezer Danso were shot around 8:30pm on Saturday.
A 24-year-old man and an elderly woman, who were also injured, are receiving treatment at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Narrating the incident to The Ghananewsaid.com, Chief Inspector Victor Dosoo, acting Public Relation Officer of the Accra Region Police Command, said the four officers, who are members of the Accra Regional Police Alpha SWAT Patrol team, received intelligence that some young men around Tramol Junction at Sukura were planning a robbery expedition.
He said the team quickly moved to the location and attempted to arrest a young man on suspicion that he might be a member of the gang planning the robbery.
According to him, the young man pulled a pistol and started firing at the police officers on site.
In the process, he injured all the four officers, as well as two civilian who were on site, and succeeded in escaping arrest.
He stated that all the injured were responding to treatment.
Chief Inspector Dosoo announced that the command, under the leadership of the Accra Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) George Alex Mensah, has commenced investigations and is determined to arrest the suspects.
He assured that the police were ever resolute to protect lives and property at all times, and encouraged all residents of Accra to go about their activities without fear.
