Farmers Cry For More Consistent Rains

FARMERS in communities in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis (STMA) have expressed disappointment at this year’s rainfall pattern.

According to them, the rainfall pattern this year has inconsistent compared to those of previous years.

The communities affected include: Mpatado, Whindo, Ntankoful, Apramdo, Adietem, Asakae, among others.

The metropolis witnessed a heavy downpour early this month which was preceded by a serious storm and subsequent flooding.

Since then, the rain has stopped and the heat in the oil city, particularly in the heart of Takoradi, has been unbearable.

Consequently, farmers engaged in various crops at the outskirts of the city say they are very disappointed that the rains have not fallen over the last three weeks.

One of the farmers, Abbey Moses, who spoke to, explained
that after planting cassava in anticipation that the rainfall pattern would remain consistent, many of the farmers were beginning to feel let down by the situation.

“Usually, we plant early when the rainfall sets in, so that in three months time we harvest, depending on the crop being cultivated. Unfortunately those of who went ahead to plant are now beginning to face serious consequences. We are praying there would be consistency in the rainfall pattern, so that it doesn’t affect yields”.

He said their yields could be affected badly should the rainfall pattern remain same going into the middle of April.
