The corridors of the Osu Traditional Council have been bustling with activities this from Wednesday as the Council marks the 10th anniversary of the OsuMantse and President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs His Majesty D. F. Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI.
As part of the celebrations, a documentary of the achievements of the Osu Mantse and Special Awards Night Ceremony were held in Accra yesterday.
The ceremony was on the theme: “Traditional Leaders, Key Partners in Development”. In addition to showcasing the achievements of His Majesty as a key partner in development and also a Traditional Leader, there will also be the Osu Stool Awards Night with Citations to Honour some entrepreneurs from Osu, private organizations, politicians and indigenes who have contributed significantly to the development of Osu and mother Ghana. Some of His Majesty’s achievements are:
Under the reign of the Osu Mantse Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, the Osu Paramount Area has witnessed a peaceful kingdom which has fostered peace and unity for socio-economic transformation of the Osu community as exemplified in the renovation of the Osu Mantse’s White Palace, giving a facelift to the Royal Mausoleum, construction of the Osu Community Library, construction of modern borehole pipes in four quarters which include Kinkawe, Ashante, Alata and Anorhor respectively.
Nii Dowuona VI has also taken bold steps to solicit the support of investors to leverage state assets in favour of his people and has also launched the Osu Mantse Community Development Initiative (OMANCODI), a community-based initiative aimed at supporting the national government in the socio-economic improvement of the Osu state. The areas of focus for this programme are Health, Education, Agriculture, and Real Estate Development.
In May 2012 he received the Distinguished Fellow Award. This Certificate was Awarded to him in recognition of his brilliance, leadership, and his immense contribution to human, intellectual, and cultural freedom and progress. By virtue of this Award, NiiDowuona VI is a Member of the Distinguished Scholars of Africa (DF).
Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI has also received several citations including ones presented to him by Commandants, Senior Command and Staff Colleges of Uganda Peoples Defense Forces and Town Keys Storey Wall – Zimbabwe Staff College!
Still under the reign of His Majesty Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, the Osu Community has also benefited from a regular health screening exercise of the elderly, nursing mothers and their babies, as well as the youth, while the cost of registration of new subscribers onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for the aged and the deprived were being catered for yearly by the Traditional Council.
Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI has projected the celebration of Homowo in Osu to become a tourist attraction. Since his installation, the annual Howomo festival keeps getting bigger and better – as it has been transformed and turned into a sight scene for holiday-makers and tourists in Ghana and from abroad.
