In the biggest global school ranking conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2015, Ghana was ranked last among 76 countries.

This was a direct result of teachers’ unprofessional approach to teaching and unwillingness to work assiduously in public school.

In this connection, there is overriding need for graduates from institutions of higher learning to orient their mindset towards working professionally and industriously to save the standard of Ghana’s education, which has taken a nosedive, especially in the public schools.

Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba, Professor Emmanuel Abakah shared these sentiments at the 23rd congregation of the College of Technology Education, at the Kumasi campus of the university.

He said today, no Ghanaian citizen is prepared to do any extra work for the country for gratis, to the extent that even teachers, famous for their proven self-sacrifice in the immediate past, collect monies from pupils in some schools daily in the name of extra-classes fees.

Prof Abakah advised the graduands to make every effort to eschew unethical, lackadaisical and unconcerned approach to work and reclaim the country’s sinking image in education.

The vice-chancellor of the university, Very Rev Father Prof Anthony Afful-Broni, thanked the government for providing the College of Technology Education with large quantities of modern tools through the Council for Technical and Vocational  Education and Training and African Development Bank, and equipment to support the technical and vocational education and training programme.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, said government will continue to emphasise the continuous linkage of academia to industry and the world of work to ensure curriculum relevance, thereby reducing graduate unemployment.

The Regional Minister re-echoed a suggestion for the consideration of the governing council and management of the University of Education, Winneba for the College of Technology Education to be made an autonomous institution.
