The Office of the Special Prosecutor has been worked on to start full prosecution of corrupt public officers in both past and present administrations when he is ready, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has assured Ghanaians.
President Akufo-Addo made this known on thursday, 21 Febraury, 2019 when addressing parliament house on his 3rd state of the nation address.
“We all await the Special Prosecutor to start his work. It is in everybody’s interest that the allegation of corruption in public office will be vigorously investigated and prosecuted if the prima face evidence is there. For myself, I know the Special Prosecutor to be a responsible public official who will act when he is ready.” – he said.
Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, has expressed frustrations about several challenges experienced by his office. The recent was his outburst over the level of cooperation he receives from the executive on his work.
Mr Amidu claimed ministers have refused to offer him the kind of support he requires to be able to deliver on his mandate. He said it will be difficult for him to do his job without the cooperation of the relevant state agencies.
About a month ago, former president Jerry John Rawlings said: “We were searching for somebody with honour. Some of the tools needed to take out the rustiness were themselves rusty then, but he was a refreshing man of integrity whose spirituality was very high.”
He, therefore, charged the leadership of the Church to enquire from Mr Amidu what may be holding him up from prosecuting the corrupt officials.
