Ghana’s Michael Essien has joined Indonesian heavyweights Persib Bandung, the club has announced.
The 34-year-old had been keeping himself in shape at former club Chelsea and has finally found a club since departing Greek giants Panathinaikos in September 2016.
Based in Bandung, Persib is one of the most well followed teams in the Indonesian Liga 1, which the club first won in 2014.
The club has more than 2 million followers on Twitter alone.
“I wish I could be a pacesetter to other world players heading to Indonesia. Hopefully this is a good beginning for Indonesia and PERSIB football,” Essien said.
“Thank you for bringing me here. I’m excited and want to give my best,” he added.
Essien has been handed the No.5 shirt, which he made his own during a nine-year stay at Stamford Bridge.
The ex-Black Stars midfielder was officially introduced Tuesday morning in a ceremony held to coincide with the club’s 84th anniversary.
The Indonesian Liga 1 begins mid-April.
