Military Doployed To Fight Galamsey

A Special Taskforce dubbed “Operation Vanguard”, has been launched in Accra.

It is made up of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to fight illegal mining.

Speaking at the event to officially deploy personnel to the mining sites, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Major General Obed Acquah urged personnel to go forward with courage and exhibit a high level of professionalism in discharge of their duties.

He said the fight against illegal mining is a good course and needs collective action.

Inspector General of Police, David Asante- Apeatu urged inhabitants of areas where personnel are being deployed, to go about their normal duties.

He emphasized that the deployment is meant to protect the environment for posterity.

The Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul reiterated government’s commitment towards eliminating illegal mining.

Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery charged the team to do its best to fulfil President Akufo-Addo’s promise of stopping illegal mining in Ghana.

Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on illegal mining, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng said the troops will remain on the field until illegal mining is dealt with and degraded lands are reclaimed.
