Parliament has approved the 2018 Budget estimates for the Ministries of Water Resources Works and Housing and the Local Government and Rural Development.
The Ministry of Water Resources Works and Housing had Ninety-one million, four hundred and eighty-one thousand and forty-four Ghana Cedis while the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development had over three hundred and fifty-nine million three hundred and twelve Cedis.
Presenting the report to the House, the Chairman on the Committee for Works and Housing, Nana Amoakoh, said monies will be used to continue works on the coastal protection works which have reached various stages of completion, construction of Sea Defence Projects at Axim, Cape Coast, Shama and Mensa Guinea in Accra.
He said the ministry will ensure the completion of the remaining six hundred and 86 affordable housing units and in addition construct 10,000 housing units of various types in all the regional capitals.
Mr. Amoakoh who is also the MP for Upper Denkyira East called on the Ministry of Finance to release budgetary allocations on time to ensure timely implementation of planned programmed.
He also appealed to the president and the Finance Ministry to consider raising special financial packages for the Ministry to improve drainage to solve the perennial flooding and erosion problems and other major projects.
The Ranking Member for the Committee for Works and Housing, Emmanuel Bedzrah, it is unfortunate the budget has been slashed by 19 percent, that notwithstanding the allotted amount is not also released on time.
He said the Ministry cannot even have full access to its Internally Generated funds and is owing contractors over one billion Cedis as at the end of October this year.
This developments Mr. Bedzrah said is crippling the activities of the Ministry.
Also approved were the budget allocations for the Ministry of Health which had four-point-four billion Cedis and the Ministry of Lands and natural Resources which got three hundred and forty seven million Cedis.
