Two siblings who have produced two children out of a secret amorous relationship which lasted years were yesterday sentenced to three years imprisonment by a Circuit Court in Cape Coast for incest while the children will be in the custody of the Department of Social Welfare.
Per the facts of the case presented by Prosecuting Detective Inspector John Asare Bediako, Mary, who is a trader, and her younger brother John have been living together for years.
Mary has two children, a five-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl and all efforts by family members to get Mary to disclose the identity of the father of her children have yielded no results.
In July this year pressure from the traditional authority of Bronyibima and family members proved fruitful and the two confessed having an amorous relationship, resulting in the birth of the two children.
Some family members subsequently reported the matter to the police who followed up and arrested them handed them over to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Cape Coast.
During interrogations, they confessed to the crime of incest and were charged in accordingly.
Passing judgement, the Judge, Mr. Kofi Ametewee, said he took into consideration the fact that Mary had a one-year old child.
An emotionally traumatized Mary broke down in tears and fainted when the judge started reading his sentence. It took family members at the court about five minutes to revive her for the Judge to continue.
