A 13-year old girl drowned Tuesday night at Yennyawoso, a suburb of the Kumasi metropolis of the Ashanti region during a heavy downpour that battered the city and its environs for more than one hour.
Eye witnesses say, the girl, who name has only been given as Mommie, who was in the company of three other children could not be rescued after all of them fell into a storm drain in their attempt to cross it to their homes.
The 4 children were said to have alighted from a taxi cab from Moshie Zongo, a neighbouring town, at the spot where the victim drowned in the violent rain water that was running through the storm drain during the torrential downpour.
“We were taking shelter at the fuel filling station here during the rainfall, we saw the children alighting from the taxi, walking along the gutter and one of them fell into it; in an attempt by the three to rescue her, they also fell into it,” an eyewitness told Angel News at the scene.
“We rushed to their rescue and managed to rescue three by using a ladder because of the depth of the gutter; one of them said there was still another one left; only to dive deeper to retrieve her lifeless body”, he said.
Investigations are underway as medical officers at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) perform autopsy on the body.
