A debate has started on media about who should qualify to become a headmaster in Ghana. Some are of the view that when one teaches for a long period, s/he automatically qualifies to Head a school.
Others also think schools must be managed like corporate entities and therefore people with background in Management, Administration and/or Law should be made Headmasters.
Speaking to RADIO TAMALE last Monday, respected educationist Mr. Daniel Fenyi emphasised that most headteachers know nothing about management and they tend to abuse the teachers and students they are supposed to lead.
Mr. Daniel Fenyi cited examples that an English, Science, Maths, Literature, Biology, teacher with 20 years of teaching experience does not automatically turn into a leader. To him, management is an art that must be consciously taught and learnt.
Explaining his position further on the Kumasi-based SOLID FM last Tuesday, educationist Mr. Daniel Fenyi said some Senior High Schools have as many as 3,000 students with about 200 staff.
To him, this number is more than the number of customers some banks and corporate bodies have yet they hire people with MBA in Management or LLB while GES do not.
Mr. Daniel Fenyi therefore called on GES to revise the mode of appointing headmasters and consider only those with degree in Management or Law.
